The sim/common macros are far to complicated and expand into an weldly mess.  Converting them, as far as possible to static C functions would be a ``good thing''

(Yes, ok, I've learnt my lesson. Macro's are bad, m'kay)

i'm not sure a bug is useful for this particular request.  we'll prob convert things as makes sense or people are interested, but the code is working as-is.
