That's not quite the solution as their XML already has the menu hierachy
created. What I am trying to do is to extract the menu (TOC) hierachy
from the XML file I have created

I don't know if I understand what you want completely but I think
Microsofts DXML tutorial might give you some good ideas on where to
start.

They generate a dynamic TOC with XML, XSL, CSS, and a little bit of
JScript.
