Brendan,
I haven't (yet) used XML Spy with DocBook (but it's in my queue). However,
I happily point out that it's trivial to configure XML Spy to use Saxon for
XSLT transforms, which works quite well. The documentation is actually
helpful in figuring out how to do this.
Hope this helps,
Jim

Well, DocBook XSL stylesheets are quite complex and many programs have
problems with them. Saxon and xsltproc are two most used processors with
DocBook XSL, you can configure your editor to use external processor
instead of built-in.
