You want your variable to be 10 if the condition is true and 5 if the
condition is false. So say that:
<xsl:variable name="start_x">
<xsl:choose>
<xsl:when test="true">10</xsl:when>
<xsl:otherwise>5</xsl:otherwise>
</xsl:choose>
</xsl:variable>
