this is a faq (I'm sure typing the text of the error message into google
would turn up the answer)

if you use xsl:variable with non empty content then you make a result
tree fragment. rft variables can only be copied to teh output or used as
strings (more or less) you can not use / on them as that is a operator
on node sets.

You can use a node-set() extension function to convert an rtf to a node
set (see th emsxml documentation)
