doesn't that datatype (and its w3c schema equivalent, base64Binary)
mean that a schema aware parser will have the
binary data to hand, so that a schema aware XSLT this will just be
a matter of
<xsl:document method="binary-guff" href="{@name}.tiff">
<xsl:value-of select="typed-value(.)"/>
</xsl:document>
