delete this:

</xsl:if>

change this

 <xsl:for-each select="/descendant::*[position() &lt; string-length($spans)]">

to

 <xsl:for-each select="/descendant::*[position() &lt;
     string-length(translate($spans,'123456789',''))]"> 

Now, what do I win?
