Not nothing. It returns a newline and a space which is the first text
node. value-of applied to a node set always gives the string value of
the first node.
You could use copy-of instead. Or more in line with your intuition you
could specify <xsl:strip-space elements= "article"/> then white space
nodes appearing as children of article will be stripped and won't count
towards value-of (or anything else)
