Hello David,
would the translation to uppercase solve your problem?
Something like this:
test = "value/text[translate(substring(., 0,
4),'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz','ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ') = $key]"
where $key is only uppercase, e.g. "NAME"
