Since no one else seems to have picked this up ... in this case,

<xsl:template match="p">
  <para>  
    <xsl:value-of select="."/>
  </para>
<xsl:template>

or <xsl:value-of select="normalize-space()"/>

will get you what you want, since the value of a node is the concatenated
string value of all its descendants.

This might be a FAQ ... it's certainly a semi-FAQ.
