I know nothing about SDL, so forgive the newbie question, but why is it
a better option than tcl/tk?
It's not so much that SDL is intrinsically better, but that it's a
new interface design started from scratch with the goal of doing
everything within a single window, as most commercial games are
organized these days. SDL does help, by being able to support
translucent popups and non-rectangular interface elements that
"float" over other elements. The UI won't have quite the flexibility
of the multi-window arrangement, but I suspect that's not so
important to players.
SDL is also optimized for games; many of Loki's Linux game ports
were done with SDL. Check out www.libsdl.org for the details.
