systemtap 2.3 release

The systemtap team announces release 2.3, "jbnq fdhvjjry"!

   improved pass-2 error messages, runtime preprocessor conditionals,
   global module variable visibility, internal improvements,
   colorized error messages, uprobe pre-filtering, re-written
   regular expression support

= Systemtap frontend (stap) changes

- java("") probes are now restricted to pre-existing jvm
  pid's with a listing in jps -l output to avoid recursive calls

- Alternative functions are now suggested when function probes could
  not be resolved. For example, kernel.function("vfs_reads") will
  suggest vfs_read. Other probes for which suggestions are made are
  module.function, process.function, and process.library.function.

- Has life been a bit bland lately? Want to spice things up? Why not
  write a few faulty probes and feast your eyes upon the myriad of
  colours adorning your terminal as SystemTap softly whispers in your
  ear... 'parse error'. Search for '--color' in 'man stap' for more

- systemtap's dyninst runtime now allows use of the -c command
  parameter to target runtime over the course of a process

- global module variables are now available to probe with the @var

= Systemtap script language changes

- A "runtime" preprocessor conditional has been added as follows:

    %( runtime == "kernel" %?
    # do something we can only do in kernel mode

    %( runtime == "dyninst" %?

- The notation @var("varname@cuname", "module") is used for accessing
  global variables.  If the cuname is not specified, then all cu's are

- Support for the Posix ERE named character classes has been added to
  the regexp engine, e.g. [:digit:], [:alpha:]

= Systemtap runtime changes

- The java backend now requires the targeted process to be pre-existing.

- Systemtap now makes use of the kernel uprobes pre-filtering to call
  UPROBE_HANDLER_REMOVE for any process that happens to share the same
  inode.  This removes unwanted overhead on unrelated processes.

- A substantial internal overhaul of the regexp engine has resulted in
  correct behaviour on further obscure edge cases. The regexp engine
  now implements the ERE standard and correctly passes the testsuite
  for the glibc regexp engine (minus portions corresponding to
  unimplemented features -- i.e. subexpression capture and reuse).

  sops_uaddr for consistency with [nd_]syscall.semtimedop.

- The following tapset functions are deprecated in release 2.3:
  'stap_NFS_CLIENT', '__getfh_inode', '_success_check',
  '_sock_prot_num', '_sock_fam_num', '_sock_state_num',
  '_sock_type_num', and '_sock_flags_num'.

= Systemtap sample scripts

- New samples:
  semop-watch.stp              demonstrates pulling apart userspace
                               struct/array parameters from syscall.*
                               probe context
  thread-business.stp	       monitor syscall history
  pf4.stp		       time based sampling of the top 20 stack
                               backtraces (kernel or user) on a per-cpu

= Known issues with this release

- Some kernel crashes continue to be reported when a script probes
  broad kernel function wildcards.  (PR2725)

- The java byteman backend is a work in progress.  Some installation
  steps are manual, and not enough context variables are available.

- 32-on-64 bit userspace unwinding is truncated on older kernels, such
  as 2.6.32 (PR15757)

- The dyninst backend is still very much a prototype, with a number
  of issues, limitations, and general teething woes. For instance:
  + lack of support for multiarch/cross-instrumentation
  + tapset functions are still incomplete relative to what is supported
    when the kernel backend is active
  + exception handling becomes completely broken in programs
    instrumented by the current version of dyninst (PR14702)
  + command line interrupts are slightly mishandled (PR15049)
  + not all registers are made available on 32-bit x86 (PR15136)
