These snapshot tarball files normally contain a SNAPSHOT file with the
git commit code in it.  (The last few missed it due to a sysadmin
snafu on sourceware.org.)

But really, these snapshots are auto-deleted frequently that they
should not be treated as long-lasting or easily-reproducible
artifacts.  If you want to keep packaging snapshots for debian, may I
suggest generating your own "git archive" copy, named however you see
fit?
