FWIW, I'm still testing the toolchain with GCC 6.1 but so far
libstdc++ cannot be built for targets/multilibs with 16- or 20-bit

I looked at both PRs and it seems that no Newlib patch is necessary? Do
you need to patch Newlib as well, which should show up in the next snapshot?
