parse error when compiling newlib-1.17.0

Greetings,

When building newlib-1.17.0 I get a weird parsing error message:

/m/m2/safwat/navid/src2/newlib/libc/include/sys/_types.h:36: parse error
before `__extension__'

How do I solve this problem? what might cause this?
