Can you per chance have a look at:
http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=4863
or:
http://www.sourceware.org/ml/libc-ports/2007-07/msg00011.html
please? I do not care about release branches too much, but I do not think
a change as almost obvious as this one deserves a lot of consideration
before taking it into the trunk -- it fixes a problem at least for one man
and if there is someone else who cares, they will discover any potential
breakage in due course.
Please note that the correct operation of /etc/ld.so.cache is required
for libraries located in the additional directories specified in
/etc/ld.so.conf to be found by the dynamic linker. Libraries in the
predefined directories are unaffected (except from some slight performance
hit), which is why, I believe, the problem remained unnoticed so long.
You can debug the issue by setting $LD_DEBUG to "libs".

Unfortunately I cannot offer myself for the MIPS port right now, but I
shall see if there is anything that can be done about it. Thanks for the
heads-up.
