Yes, it does.  This seems to be a very bad situation.  On
sunsite and mirrors the default Linux C compiler these days (in
Linux/GCC) is egcs.  On the GNU sites we have gcc 2.8.N as the
default.  Ordinary users -- such as myself -- who have never in
the past encountered this sort of problem might be forgiven for
thinking that code compiled using one of these would be
compatible with code compiled using the other.  The public
pronouncements that I have seen regarding the gcc/egcs issue
make no mention of binary incompatibility.  Incompatibilities
between libc5 and glibc2 are unavoidable, but surely these
cross-cutting compiler issues ought to be eminently avoidable.
