I am afraid that change will unable to keep it a constant width.

How about using "%a %_d %b %Y %l:%M:%S.%p" instead.

Likewise, how about using "%a %_d %b %Y %l:%M:%S.%p %Z" instead.

Likewise, how about using "%_d.%_m.%y" instead.
