sybase can't run on stock glibc

I've been trying for days to get sybase-12.5 to run on linux without
success.
Then I came across a posting that says Sybase ASE 12.5 would only run on
RedHat 7.3 which has glibc-2.2.5-34 and libpthread-0.9.so
I downloaded glibc-2.2.5-34.src.rpm, and managed to compile it, but failed
to install glibc-2.2.5-34 due to the the following errors...
/bin/ls: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: version `GLIBC_2.1.1' not found (required by
/lib/l
ibc.so.6)
/bin/ls: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: version `GLIBC_2.2.3' not found (required by
/lib/l
ibc.so.6)
/bin/ls: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: version `GLIBC_2.2' not found (required by
/lib/lib
c.so.6)
I'm using stock glibc-2.2.5 (from ftp.gnu.org) with gcc-2.95.3 on
linux-2.4.20rc1
Thanks,
Jeff
