Franz said that he wrote in assembly for optimization,
to avoid typos in parameter passing and to tell the linker
it can use a local jump (@local). Also the libgcc-compat.S
form provides continuity with the trunk form of the patch.
It works fine here on my debian ppc sid machine using
binutils 2.13.90.0.4 and gcc 3.2 (the reason I want it in
glibc-2-2-branch is so the Debian glibc developers will
pull it in with their upcoming cvs pull). On ppc we need
these fixes for our upcoming switch to gcc 3.2 in debian sid.
