Perhaps a less severe change than Franz suggested regarding non-PIC
shared objects
would be more useful. How about having the linker issue a warning upon
linking a
non-PIC shared object? That would allow platforms like ppc to more
easily tag those
packages that are still creating non-PIC shared objects so we can submit
patches
to their maintainers to change those to PIC shared objects.
