I have partially resolved this problem. I had configured libc with
"configure --enable-add-ons=crypt,linuxthreads", ie. without
--prefix. As a result, locale-related code failed.
I don't know why emacs would crash because of that, but since I
recompiled libc with --prefix=/usr, emacs works again.
