gc-hooks?

I recall a discussion on GC-related hooks. Did they ever get
implemented? I would like to be notified when a GC starts and end
since, yes, I suspect I have problems with my SMOBs. For the moment I
have diagnostic output (obeying a compile time switch) to the mark and 
free functions I have defined, but that is not satisfactory since that
generates a lot of output. 

Any suggestion is welcome!
