With the aim of incorporating mature/good/tested packages into the core? I.e., using such an repository as some kind of test-camp? That would be great. Nevertheless do I think that many scientists are not /willing/ to specify (or even get) whatever extra packages they need. So they evaluate and use GSL based on what is in the standard (core) distribution. Therefore incorporating packages into the core over time is a must, to my mind.
