extensions (was: Framework for filtering?)

With the aim of incorporating mature/good/tested packages into the
core? I.e., using such an repository as some kind of test-camp?

That would be great. Nevertheless do I think that many scientists are
not /willing/ to specify (or even get) whatever extra packages they
need. So they evaluate and use GSL based on what is in the standard
(core) distribution. Therefore incorporating packages into the core
over time is a must, to my mind.
