If your rpm binary is disabled, you might possibly want to consider
the binary i686 tarball of glibc-2.2.3 available at
ftp://ricardo.ecn.wfu.edu/glibc-2.2.3/
Built using gcc-2.95.3 on i686 under linux 2.4.7. At your own risk
and all that, of course.
