In the first case, the symbol is aligned at a multiple of 256, as running the
test case under strace shows:
exit_group(-1947259136) = ?
This is 0x8bef2f00 in hexadecimal. This is truncated by the kernel to 0.
In the second case, the symbol is not at a multiple of 256, so you get a
non-zero exit status.
You get different addresses are a result of the way ELF linking is implemented.
