[Bug libc/5979] New: Errors in the glibc-2.7 PO file

Hello :)

I have just translated the file libc-2.7 for the Translation Project. In doing so, I've encountered the 
following typos, which I thought you might like to weed out in a future release.

1. Missing spaces

Please add a space between the placeholder and the text. Otherwise, gettext can assume that the text 
is part of the placeholder.


2. Incorrect escape sequences

I'm assuming this character should be "n". In any case, the "v" causes a gettext error.

libc-2.7/libc-2.7.pot:124: internationalized messages should not contain the `\v' escape sequence
libc-2.7/libc-2.7.pot:1027: internationalized messages should not contain the `\v' escape sequence
libc-2.7/libc-2.7.pot:2384: internationalized messages should not contain the `\v' escape sequence
libc-2.7/libc-2.7.pot:4117: internationalized messages should not contain the `\v' escape sequence

Please fix this in all four messages.


3. Typos?

4. Suggestion

I suggest you use a placeholder for the version number. Then one string can cover any number of 
possible versions.


5. Do we need both these strings?

6. Typo?

7. Unclear?

This is not exactly easy to translate directly, and since I notice users have difficulty understanding it, I 
have translated the "memory clobbered" part of these two strings as "memory reserved for system use 
has been overwritten".


8. Typo

#: nscd/nscd.c:103
msgid "Print current configuration statistic"

"statistics" is always plural.


9. Typo

#: sunrpc/clnt_perr.c:345
msgid "Invalid client credential"

#: sunrpc/clnt_perr.c:349
msgid "Server rejected credential"

"credentials" is also always plural.


10. Simplification

There are 13 strings of the format "process_name: out of memory\n". I suggest you substitute a 
placeholder for the process name. Then we only have to translate the string once.

This not only reduces the size of the file, thus making it more likely it will get translated, it also 
increases the quality of translation, since repetitive translation is more likely to attract errors.

?? "alphabetic" is an adjective. Either the referred noun is missing, or we need to substitute a noun for 
"alphabetic".

12. Repetitive again

Again, a single placeholder would reduce these five strings requiring individual translation, to only 
one string.


13. Incorrect term

14. Incorrect term

OR

"until" is an adverb, not an adjective, so it can't be used to describe a noun (time).

There may also be a word or two missing in this string, if the meaning is not as I have interpreted 
above.


15. Unclear

??

I'm currently interpreting this as a state of signing something that is extended, but if that is the case, 
the string should substitute "extension" or "extended [noun]" for the verb "extend". Unless an "extend" 
is an expression similar to an "include", in which case some contextual information would help the 
translator provide an accurate translation.


16. Contextual information

Please note that recent versions of gettext include the msgctxt feature, which allows you to include 
contextual information in strings . Contextual information is essential to creating accurate and high-
quality translations. It also serves to differentiate identical strings with different purposes.
