gdb6.7: Symbol format `elf32-sparc' unknown

Hallo,
I've built gdb 6.7 for Sun Solaris 5.8 (./configure --enable-gcc
--prefix=<location>).
Starting up gdb gives the following:

This GDB was configured as "sparc-sun-solaris2.8"...
So far so good. But when i try to debug my c++ application i get the
following errors:
"I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that. Symbol format `elf32-sparc' unknown."
Because of that i can not debug my applications. I didn't have this problem
with 6.3.
How can it be solved?
