GDB 5.3 not debugging properly on Linux kernel 2.6

Hello,

We are running our native OS on a linux kernel version 2.6 (on a RHEL 4.2 system). Debugging using
gdb 5.3 gives a problem "Cannot recognize signal trampoline". As a result, we absolutely cannot do any single stepping. Is this a compatibility issue ?
Should I not be using gdb 5.3 with underlying linux kernel being 2.6 ?

At present, we cannot upgrade to a higher version of gdb. We are compelled to use gdb 5.3 since
it contains a lot of patches meant for the product. So can I apply any patch on gdb 5.3 to solve
this signal trampoline problem ? I wanted to isolate and understand the problem completely and
the nature of changes needed in gdb 5.3 to solve this issue.

Any help here will be appreciated. I need to come to a decision regarding this issue soon since
its halting the debugging for a lot of people.

Thanks,
Kalpana Balaji
