the 'garbage string' is gdb protocol, maybe you should attach gdb to your 
target and debug the problem. 

if its happening when you type 'go' then your crashing someplace in startup, 
is probably a configuration problem spesific to your board.

i would also suggest asking on the redboot mailing lists for help with 
redboot, not the gdb ones.
