oddity when exiting

I tried to quit gdb and got this:

(gdb) q
The program is running. Exit anyway? (y or n) y
/home/tromey/gnu/Trunk/build/gcc/jc1: No such file or directory.
(gdb)

Using `q' again got me out. But why did this happen? I had deleted
the executable in question, sure -- but I think it doesn't make sense
for gdb to prevent me from quitting in this case.

This is with:

fleche. gdb --version

AKA /usr/bin/gdb on an x86 Red Hat Linux 7.3 box.
