GDB on PowerPC

I'm new to using GNU tools, so if some of these questions
are trivial, please bear with me.

I have target hardware(evaluation board) which has a PowerPC
MPC8260 device. It is currently running RTEMS OS, ver 4.5. The
code has been ported and can support remote debugging through
an ethernet network connection.

How do I get gdb talking to my target? The RTEMS package
has both the RCP and RDBG support. I have compiled in the remote
debug capabilities and using an EST emulator, I have confirmed
that the sockets and network (FreeBSD)
functions seem to be working OK. I'm able to ping and Telnet
to the board.

If you can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly
appreciated. I've read most of the documentation and it is not
clear how gdb can be connected to a target over ethernet. If
I can just get started, I think most everything will fall into
place afterwards. I've built
gdb ver. 4.18 and the following message
is output when started under cygwin:

This GDB was configured as "--host=i686-pc-cygwin32 --target=powerpc-rtems".

Thanks,
