Indeed, and we have "-iex" for that nowadays:
$ gdb --help
...
--eval-command=COMMAND, -ex
Execute a single GDB command.
May be used multiple times and in conjunction
with --command.
--init-eval-command=COMMAND, -iex
Like -ex but before loading inferior.
