Fantastic that was it !
I knew something was fishy but was getting crazy and couldn't believe it was a
gdb bug. In fact it's a feature and I will follow the advice in
https://sourceware.org/gdb/onlinedocs/gdb/Environment.html , i.e. move it to
.login.
Many thanks for the prompt answer and sorry for wrongly criticizing gdb :'(
