In playing with this problem a little, it appears to be the optimization
(-O2 or -O) on the Alpha-OSF platform that is causing the problem.
Removing optimization appears to produce a working executable. Curious
that this does not happen on SGI, IBM, Sun systems. This problem still
recurs even with the latest snapshots.
