I don't see any reason for a branch here.  The extra work is a pain,
and the patches have already started generating a nice amount of
productive discussion, more (I suspect) than they would have gotten if
they were on a branch.  Incremental development on mainline is good;
branching might be appropriate if you're trying to chose between two
choices and undoing the wrong choice would be a fair amount of work,
or if you can't figure out how to do something incrementally, but I
don't think that's the situation with these patches.
