In my experience, the other tools (gcc, ld, etc.) also run
about twice as fast under Linux.

Definitely.  For text editors, windows users seem to like
nedit, and visual-slickedit. I recommend trying Linux to all my
customers who are using eCos, but about 3/4 stick with Cygwin.
