I think it would be better if this file explicitly stated that it is a
compilation test only, otherwise people may incorrectly use it as a basis for
other code.  I realise that there are at least two signs that show the code is
unreachable, but not why it's still there, and the 'dummy' variable (presumably
an attempt to avoid aggressive dead-code optimisation) is unclear too -- one
reasonable reading would be that this is old code which has been "temporarily"
disabled.
