What you are seeing is that the German word for Index, Stichwortverzeichnis,
does not fit in the horizontal space of the first column in the index.  What
you want is for the title to span across both columns, pushing down the
second column along with the first.  Unfortunately, that kind of column
spanning is hard to do in the DocBook stylesheets because the block with the
span property must be outside of all other blocks, which isn't the case for
titles.

I think the easiest solution is to reduce the font size of the index "title"
element.  You can do that by changing the titlepage spec file for the index
title pages, and then rebuilding the titlepage templates.  See this
