BTW, is there any doc. that gives some kind of a
'Crash Course' on the latest docbook tools/apps?

I'm not aware of a "crash course" but you might want to try Bob Stayton's excellent book "DocBook XSL: The Complete Guide" which is available online [1]. Part 1 gives a brief introduction into some relevant tools which helped me a lot. The other parts might as well help you getting started with your tool chain and stylesheets.

Then there's "Docbook: The Definitive Guide" written by Norman Walsh and
Leonard Muellner which gives you a complete reference to docbook [2].

The FO Parameter Reference is also very helpful [3].

Then of course there's this list and it's archive which is an unlimited
source of knowledge, help and advise [4]. I would not have been able to get
started with DocBook XML so quickly wihtout this list.

Speaking of advise: I'd suggest to use XML catalogs rather then using a
file reference to the DTD. XML catalogs make "XML setup more portable and
more flexible". The general idea is to use an special file where generic
addresses are mapped to local directories on your machine. Such a catalog
can be used to locate the DTD, the stylesheet, system entities, you name it
while processing your XML files. See
http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/Catalogs.html for more information on
catalogs.
