My xsltproc gives me different error message stating that I'm using unkwnown function inside xsl:key definition. May be xsltproc doesn't support user defined functions inside xsl:keys. I will ask on xsltproc mailing list.

Hum, apparently William Brack just fixed this in CVS, see
    http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122483

Good message is that new indexing now works with xsltproc. There is still one minor issue which can be easily overcomed. If you want to try this new indexing mechanism with xsltproc, just download newest 1.1.1 version of libxslt and also add the following namespace declaration to your customization layer (this is to overcome last unresolved issue):

xmlns:i="urn:cz-kosek:functions:index"

Rest of procedure is same as in my original posting. Now I have index localization files for Czech, German, French, Spanish and I'm able to prepare English one. If you could provide me with another languages I can integrate them into standard stylesheets distribution.
