Re: DOCBOOK: Altova AUTHENTIC - is now Free

Good thoughts, David. Thanks. And for the tip about "finding" the .sps file. Perhaps I'll reinstall and take another look, although I would have appreciated a little more "upfrontness" about what was actually forthcoming for free.

I got that same dialog about not finding an .sps but was able to get it
to use the sps they ship by clicking "OK" at the dialog you mentioned
and navigating to "C:\Program
Files\Altova\AUTHENTIC\sps\Template\Publishing\DocBook.sps" (the .sps
file is xml, btw; don't know if it's documented well enough to let you
design it without their tool tho). From then on, it associates that
doctype with that sps by default. I believe the "stylesheet application"
is one of the full featured versions of xmlspy, along the adobe acrobat
model: free viewer, you pay for the full-featured tool. I can envision a
case where one specialist carefully designs a .sps and many content
providers use Authentic to shield them from the tags to some degree and
validate their contribution. I suspect there's a fair amount of work to
do in designing that .sps file tho, and whether it would be appropriate
for docbook will depend very much on what your doing with docbook, how
many people are contributing, what level of knowledge of the content
model the have/need to have, etc.

I'm poking around in it now with a small doc. From what I can tell the
".sps" file for docbook (a set of instructions that tells Authentic

how

to present an instance of docbook) isn't written all that well, but
you'll get the idea--it's a way to create forms/templates for
non-xml-aware content providers. Does anybody have/know of a better
DocBook.sps than the one provided?

I've customized my sdocbook DTD, therefore I can't open any of my files in this product. A message window comes up stating that there is no .sps

file for my document, that the license does not allow source view of instances and that I should go to the "stylesheet" application and create a new .sps file for my file. I have been unable to find the stylesheet application, either on disk in the installation or as a menu option in Authentic itself. If I am right, there is certainly something authentic about the free-ness of this product but it's not in the name or the functionality.
