Hi there.
I investigated a problem which has annoyed me for months (years?), but
never had the time to sort out. I've found something that might help fix
it.
Using OpenJade, Norman's stylesheets and JadeTeX, I get many messages
like this when processing a .tex file with pdfjadetex:
Overfull \hbox (2.797pt too wide) in alignment at lines 14917--16487
Taking a closer look at the file, the warnings are caused by tables. I
noticed a pattern when comparing the messages to the tables for which
they occurred:
Overfull \hbox (2.797pt too wide) in alignment at lines 14917--16487
[a six-column table]
Overfull \hbox (1.199pt too wide) in alignment at lines 23172--23174
[a two-column table]
Overfull \hbox (1.59999pt too wide) in alignment at lines 57749--57751
[a three-column table]
Apparently, given an N-column table, pdfjadetex will complain saying the
hbox is 0.4*(N+1) points too wide. I immediately suspected it had
something to do with column separators. After altering one of the
tables so that frame="none" and colsep="0", the message was gone.
I would like to have the separators back, though! ;)
I don't know whether the problem is in OpenJade, the stylesheets or
JadeTeX (or any combination thereof). It isn't a major blocker, but I
find it quite annoying nevertheless - and I'm sure the message can make
newcomers panic when they first see it.
For what it's worth, I'm using the latest packages from RedHat's
RawHide: openjade-1.3-13, jadetex-3.3-1, docbook-style-dsssl-1.59-10.
Not that I think it makes much of a difference, because I observed
this also on older and different setups since maybe 1999.
