My initial HOME var was:

$ echo $HOME
C:

$ export HOME=/home/foo
Now it works but I need to add this to a startup script or something.

Is your username foo?

yes

You said you use a W2K machine, so : - Right-click on "My computer" and select "Properties" - Go to "Advanced" and "Environment variables" - There, you can set user and system variables; In the user section, add HOME C:\cygwin\home\foo. The names i mentioned are some backward translations of the one i found on me own French W2K version, so they can slightly differ in reality.
