This is /etc/group, on a freshly setup cygwin on W98SE:
Max::500:544::/home/Max:/bin/bash
And there is NO /etc/passwd at all!
The problem seems to be that the postinstall script is being run by
command.com, which completely fails to understand the unix-ish line breaks.
Presumably NT cmd.exe does, so I guess the problem might not show up there.
