As this method to start xterm seems to work, do I have to start the X server some other way than I do now? I just use the Win start menu entry Cygwin-X->XWin Server.
I can answer that one myself. Running startxwin from mintty works without a hitch. This is no big deal for me, but this still leaves me wondering why one of the officially recommended ways to start X (as per the docs, see http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ug/using.html#using-starting) fails on my system.
