Which doesn't really mean anything if the problem isn't fixable without
a fix to the OS except that people with this problem are SOL.

Hopefully you aren't preaching to me. I doubt if there are many people
around who've spent as much time working around Microsoft problems as I
have. It's been mentioned that this particular problem was the subject
of some discussion in cygwin land already and we've tried various
things to fix it.
