Spanning desktop across multiple X servers...

First, an apology. This is not, strictly speaking, a Cygwin/Xfree question.

I know it's possible to span a single X desktop (for lack of a better term) across multiple display adapters residing in the same machine. Basically the 2 attached monitors behavior as the left and right halves of single, unified root window.

What I'm trying to find out is if it's possible to span a single X desktop across 2 display adapters, each residing on a different machine? If so, what would it take to get this set up?

I guess it comes down to whether the "spanning" function is something handled completely by the X server, or if it's implemented by the Window Manager or some other piece of "middle ware".
