If you can start a local xterm, but can't display
remotely, have you checked the security settings
(xfree86 is pretty restrictive by default)?
Have you tried starting a local xterm,
running "xhost +", then starting a remote
session (without closing down the first
local xterm)?
What is the error message you see when trying to
connect?
