Clive,
I recently found that newer versions of kde have a kdmrc configuration file
with yet another set of kdm configuration parameters including XDMCP. This
was on a debian machine running an unstable version of the kernel. The
location of the kdmrc file on this system was /etc/kde2/kdm/kdmrc. By
default, XDMCP was turned off. Find the configuration file and look for
[Xdmcp].
